A social media ban only delays the problem. Here is what to do.
Invest in your students' digital media education and capability building. Raise them to be self-regulated, purposeful users today and digital leaders in the near future.
Give your students their licence before the road opens.
A social media ban buys time. It does not teach anyone to drive. Do not push your students into digital-media traffic without an L-plate for supervised learning and a P-plate for self-controlled use. Scroll2Action uses the time the ban buys to take them from supervised learners to licensed digital leaders, before they merge into the traffic at sixteen.
Learn under Supervision
Ten online modules, co-created with Scroll2Action students and aligned to the Stage 5 curriculum, ready for any teacher to run in a relevant subject. This is the theory and the language: students learn to name what is happening in their digital lives so they can tame it.
We don't shelter one student from the storm.
We grow a forest.
Awareness on its own does not change behaviour. Scroll2Action is built on evidence: cultivate the person, shift the peer group, then change the environment so the new behaviour holds.
Resilience is collective
Most programs ask a student to change alone, like sheltering one tree against the wind and floods in a desert. Scroll2Action grows a forest: trees standing close, holding each other up, resisting the storm together and drawing the rain back in. Name it to tame it, turn peer pressure into peer influence, and let student-led projects reshape the culture.
Change one, the others move
The program cultivates the person first: the capabilities and tools to analyse behaviour, to name it and tame it, and to model something better for peers. Student-led projects then change the environment, so the behavioural change becomes easy, strong and sustainable. Change one part of the system and, as Bandura showed, the other parts begin to move.
Every ring of the ecosystem
Real change needs the whole ecosystem. Teachers, peers, mentors and the whole school join the program, and it reaches parents and siblings too. Experts and the Scroll2Action team walk alongside students and schools the whole way, so the change is sustained rather than one-off.
Real contact beats the algorithm
Scroll2Action deliberately brings together public, independent and faith schools from across Sydney, so students meet a truly multicultural society and unite around the concerns every student, teacher and parent shares. A young person's own experience of the other becomes the reference point that defeats misinformation, disinformation, defamation and conspiracy. This is contact theory in practice, and a proactive resistance to the filter bubbles waiting online.
